The Upper Sava Valley in summer and winter: waterfalls and gorges, a riverside cycle path, mountain lakes and the high passes of the Julian Alps.

Between the river and the peaks.

Gozd Martuljek is a small village in the Upper Sava Valley, the long green valley that runs from Rateče near the Italian border down towards Jesenice. To the north rise the wooded Karavanke; to the south, the limestone walls of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park.

The Sava Dolinka runs along the valley floor, and an old railway line beside it is now a cycle path. Kranjska Gora, Lake Jasna and the road over the Vršič pass are a short drive west.

Things to do

  • Martuljek Gorge & Waterfalls

Two waterfalls below the Špik group, inside Triglav National Park. The lower fall is reached through the narrow Martuljek gorge on a path with wooden footbridges, an easy walk for families. The upper fall is a longer, steeper hike for experienced walkers. Both are at their fullest in late spring, when the snow melts.

  • The valley cycle path (D-2)

The Jure Robič cycling route follows the line of a former railway through the Upper Sava Valley, from Jesenice to Rateče near the Italian border, and passes through Gozd Martuljek. Good for an unhurried ride or a long walk beside the Sava Dolinka.

  • Kranjska Gora

The valley's best-known resort: ski slopes in winter, and in summer a base for hiking, cycling and the mountain road over the Vršič pass.

  • Lake Jasna

A clear mountain lake where the road to the Vršič pass begins, watched over by a bronze statue of Zlatorog, the golden-horned chamois of Slovenian legend.

  • Zelenci Nature Reserve

A protected wetland at the head of the valley, where the Sava Dolinka rises in a small emerald-green spring lake.

  • Planica

The valley where ski flying was born, home to the Planica Nordic Centre, with walks deeper into the Tamar valley beneath the Julian Alps.

Descriptions checked against the Kranjska Gora tourist board and other public sources in October 2026. Distances are not given unless confirmed.
